USATF New England 5K Championship, Rhody 6.05.11

I've done Rhody 6 times before... but the plan was for this to be my 7th & fastest Rhody.   Over the past year + I've stepped up my training and thank my running friends, Coach Braz & Whirlaway team for showing me the way to more.

We met at Whirlaway store at 6:45 a.m. and travelled to Rhode Island... seeing aftermath of fatal car accident shook us up a little, but even more for some friends who actually witnessed it.

Checked out course a couple miles with Karen Durante (Gumby), chatted with Holly Madden (Smokin' Ivy) and cheered for the men who ran first.   Temperature felt great, did my drills & strides & lined up just shoulders from the line.   The men offered support and encouragement all along the course... Stephen Peckiconis even called out my first mile and how to navigate the 3rd mile.  Scott Mason (Flash) took fantastic photos.

I ran aggressively, 6:21, 6:33, 6:30, :39 for net 20:05, my official time was 20:08... pace 6:29.   My previous fastest Rhody was 6:51 pace... so yes, I was very, very pleased... did what I set out to do by almost a minute.   Overall results

Congrats to Whirlaway teams which took 4 first places and a fourth & third.

Feeling good, I did another run when I got home to make it a 14 mile day... then an ice bath and celebrating.   Pardon the cliche, but damn, this is living the dream.

Sara, After your sub 42:00 at JJR 10K it seemed obvious you were a lock for close to 20 mins over 5K. I expected to run 20:10 and knew you are faster so hope I helped put you in the right frame of mind pre-race. Your strong mileage base now puts you proportionately further ahead of me the longer the race so I'll try to get in another 5K or a mile race with you in order to get a W!

Great pacing, I think you ran it perfectly. I'm more affected by elevation changes so ran similar pace after accounting for the small up and downs in last two miles
