Fernando put together a few weeks of training for me prior to the race... adding some quality miles.
Linda Jennings called to wish me luck as Hillcheck and I travelled to New Bedford. We met up with GSR, Whirlaway and friends from other teams, grabbed our numbers, shirts and headed for 2 mile warm-up with GSR.
Temperature felt perfect, just right in singlet, shorts, sexy arm warmers & gloves. I probably was too far back from the starting line, so I made a mental note to be smarter about that. I felt pretty decent and didn't look at my splits, just kept focused. In the last few miles, my calves started cramping, maybe a combination of things (not taking water during the race; dehydrated from being sick; broken orthotic; fastest that these little legs have ever covered 13.1 miles before) Nadine Palmer and Dan Hill came by me and my legs wouldn't respond to stay with them... primary task felt like "don't fall over from seizing leg muscles"
Getting a PR was unexpected... almost a minute faster than previous fastest half-marathon (CHaD, Hanover 2010) which was during the strength of last fall's marathon training. This was my 9th New Bedford half and a 6.5 minute course PR. Did a brief warm-down, rehydrated, ate something and got home for an ice bath. I think my effort pushed my cold into a sinus infection, started antibiotics, but I haven't had a sinus infection since 2006, so no biggie... certainly worth it. I couldn't ask for a better, more successful day at New Bedford. Thanks so much to Fernando/GTD, GSR, Whirlaway & training friends!
Congratulations to Whirlaway Womens/ Mens Masters and Seniors teams for winning team divisions!
